Five gold medals at provincials for Nelson Boxing Club

Local fighters put on a clinic last weekend

Nothing less than gold would do for the Nelson Boxing Club at provincials.

Local fighters Riel Martinez, Samson Berkeley, Stryder Sutton, Max Berkeley and Elias Martinez each won gold in their divisions last weekend at the B.C. Boxing Provincials in Abbotsford.

Riel Martinez took the 90-pound junior B open gold with a unanimous decision over Zack Bower of Grande Praire, Alta., in a bout that featured two standing eight counts.

Samson Berkeley dropped Cranbrook’s Kaden Swanson with a body shot in the second round and went on to score a unanimous decision in the 145-pound junior C novice division final.

Max Berkeley won 145-pound junior B gold in a walkover, and also fought an exhibition bout against Quinn McDonald of Sooke, B.C.

Elias Martinez also took the 154-pound junior C gold in a walkover. He fought two exhibition matches against youth provincial champion Connor Hollingshead at 165 pounds.

Elias Martinez and Samson Berkeley is also set to compete for Team B.C. at the national championships in Edmonton next month. Berkeley was included following his performance at provincials.

Sutton and opponent Eshan Sidhi of Abbotsford were each awarded golds in their 70-pound junior A novice bout.

Coach Jesse Pineiro meanwhile was voted runner up for coach of the year.
