Final four take ice in Parksville in B.C. Men’s Curling Championships

Okanagan rivals Cotter, Geall to square off in prime time Saturday

Defending champion Jim Cotter of Vernon will square off with Sean Geall of Kelowna in a rematch of their A Event final as the 2018 belairdirect B.C. Men’s Curling Championships moves into its page playoffs at Parksville Curling Club Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018.

In Friday’s action, Geall bounced back from a one-point loss to Cotter a night earlier to clinch the top spot in the B Event with wins over Glen Jackson of Victoria Curling Centre and Brent Pierce of the Royal City Curling Club of New Westminster.

Cotter and Geall will play at 7 p.m. for a berth in Sunday’s championship final, in a match to be televised locally on ShawTV.

The other two spots in the page playoffs were secured Friday by Jason Montgomery of Victoria Curling club and Dean Joanisse of Golden Ears Winter Club, who took to the ice at 2 p.m. Saturday in a loser-out contest. The winner will go on to play the loser of the Cotter-Geall game in Sunday’s 11 a.m. semifinal.

Montgomery, one of three Victoria entries in the 12-team provincial championships, fought back through the C Event with three wins Friday.

On Friday, his rink defeated Wylie Eden of Penticton 8-5, used a two-rock pickup in an extra, 11th end to dispatch Grant Dezura of Golden Ears Winter Club, then scored the tiebreaking point in the 10th end of a 7-6 win over Pierce in one C Final.

Joanisse, who dropped into the C Event with an 8-7 loss to Pierce in the B Event in Friday morning’s draw, rallied with an 11-7 win over Victoria’s Wes Craig in the afternoon session and topped Jackson 10-7 in the other C Event final to grab the fourth and final playoff berth.

Sunday’s championship final will be played at 4 p.m. at the club, located in Parksville’s Community Park. Each of this weekend’s page playoff games will be televised by Shaw.
