Over half the entry slots for the Royal LePage Comox Valley Snow to Surf Relay have been taken, and the conditions at host Mount Washington are superb. There are two months to go until the 36th annual race from winter to spring happens on April 29.

The focus is on the teams ranging from competitors to Uncle Bob two houses down the block, but focus on volunteers who are the backbone of the event? Not so much.

From the ski patrol on the mountain to the ski club dispensing suds at the Comox Marina, the foundation of the race is formed by volunteer support groups and individuals who are instrumental in staging a safe and exciting day.

Ask a volunteer why they sign up for the day and the answer comes back, ‘It’s fun.’

It’s a chance to give back to the community and watch some great competitors. The cool T-shirts and refreshments are a bonus.

Get a few friends together and sign up. Students from Carihi in Campbell River have made the trek for the last two events, and the Vanier graduating class cheered the racers through Cumberland last year.

Getting on board is easy. Go to www.snowtosurf.com, navigate to Contact Us, pick an area that sounds like fun and get in touch with the emails you’ll find there.

Organizers need to quickly replace their Road Bike Boss, who left this paradise on earth for employment in the frozen north. This is a critical position that comes with experienced backup, resources and association with a dedicated volunteer core.

Email info@snowtosurf.com and get the ball rolling.
