A Maple Ridge hockey player has been picked to help lead an NCAA team into its new campaign this year.

St. Cloud State University men’s hockey coach Bob Motzko has announced that Tim Daly will serve as an alternate captain for the upcoming 2014-15 season.

“We are very excited to announce our team captains,” Motzko said.

“We could not be more pleased to have this group carry on the leadership responsibilities needed for success.”

A standout on the SCSU blueline over the past three seasons, Daly was named the Huskies’ Wiiliam Radovich Award winner for most improved play in 2013-14.

Last winter, Daly charted two goals, seven assists and 53 blocks for the Huskies.

In 103 career games for the Huskies, Daly has posted four goals, 10 assists and 107 blocks.

He is a resident of Maple Ridge, and played junior hockey with Langley of the BCHL before his move to St. Cloud State.

He helped lead their team to consecutive regular season conference championships in 2013 (WCHA) and 2014 (NCHC) along with two consecutive NCAA tournament bids during those same seasons.

A 2013 NCAA Frozen Four participant and the 2013 NCAA Midwest Regional champion, St. Cloud State has won a total of 64 games over the past three years.

St. Cloud State University will open its 2014-15 season with a 7:07 p.m. exhibition home game on Saturday, Oct. 4 against Trinity Western University at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
