Cowichan T-Birds battle to silver in home volleyball tournament

Cowichan and Vanier needed all three games to decide the championship at a senior girls volleyball tournament last Friday.

Cowichan Secondary and G.P. Vanier needed all three games to decide the championship match as the Thunderbirds hosted a one-day senior girls volleyball tournament last Friday.

Vanier won the first set 25-18, but Cowichan battled back to triumph 25-14 in the second. Vanier prevailed 15-6 in the third set.

Frances Kelsey placed third, beating Duncan Christian School 25-20, 25-19 in the bronze-medal match.

The T-Birds opened the tournament with a 26-28. 25-7, 15-4 win over Queen Margaret’s School, then were edged by Vanier 25-12, 15-25, 16-18 in a preview of the final. They then defeated Gulf Islands 25-27, 25-11, 16-14, and DCS 19-25, 25-19, 16-14.

Tournament all-stars included Makenzie English and Lindsay Elzinga from Cowichan, Kennedy Newman and Jessica Nielsen from Kelsey, Hannah Day from DCS, Regina Polanco from QMS, Hannah Grant from GISS, and Brianna Knapman from Vanier. Vanier’s Sarah Rebitt was named MVP.

Next up for the T-Birds is the AAAA Island championship tournament at Mount Douglas on Nov. 17 and 18.
