While some of us were more than happy with the winter we had during the holiday break, the extra cold weather did have a negative effect of certain events that had been planned for that time.
The Bulkley Valley Nordic Centre was to be the host for a couple of events on Dec. 31, but weather conditions caused them to be cancelled.
The Centre was scheduled to hold the Teck Cup #2 race but temperatures which dipped below the -20 mark forced it’s cancellation.
In addition, the qualifying race for the regional team for the BC Winter Games was also cancelled. Those Games will be held in Kamloops in late February.
Guidelines from Cross Country Ski Canada are as follows: With air temperatures below -20°C (at the coldest point of the course and without wind factor) and competition distances less than or equal to 15 km, the jury must postpone or cancel the competition. For the youngsters, air temperatures below -15°C (at the coldest part of the course and without a wind factor), will cause the jury to postpone or cancel the competition.
According to Jennifer Plummer of the club, the qualifying race will not be rescheduled since all entrants were eligible for the regional team. Three members of club,
, Gregory Baxter, Conor Murphy, and Caedmon Dunbar have been selected for the Games.
Some members of the BV Cross Country Ski Club were in Whistler last weekend for a BC Cup race. According to the latest reports at press time, the weather was rainy.
