Championship chase continues

Chilliwack’s Lunachicks will play in their fifth straight Metro classic women’s championship game next Sunday.

The Lunachicks punched their ticket to the title game with a 2-0 win over the Semiahmoo Sharks on Sunday in South Surrey.

The stingy Sharks entered the game having allowed only eight goals during the entire regular season.

Meanwhile, the Lunachicks welcomed Janelle Cavanaugh back into the lineup — she sat out two months with a leg injury.

Cavanaugh checked back in at the 30 minute mark of the first half and made her presence known eight minutes later, finishing off an Andrea Feaver cross to open the scoring.

The game went back and forth before Chilliwack got the  insurance goal at the 24 minute of the second half.

Kelly Joiner curled a nice corner kick that eluded the Shark defender at the near post and slipped into the net.

Lisa Hiemstra garnered the shut out for the Chilliwack squad. The defensive core of Sara Gregory, Jessica Malinowski, Trudy Hall and Helena Paul thwarted the Shark attackers on numerous occasions.

The Lunachicks travel back to South Surrey Park this weekend seeking their third title in five years.
