Camosun College coach Charles Parkinson is joining CBC for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

It’s the fifth time the coach and faculty member of Camosun’s Centre for Sport and Exercise Education will join CBC’s Olympic Summer Games broadcast team to cover volleyball and beach volleyball.

“Beach and indoor volleyball are always big draws at the Olympics and also attract a huge global audience,” said Parkinson, a former national team player and captain. “Brazil has been the mecca for these sports for the last decade and the fans are known worldwide for their bright yellow shirts and their singing and drumming from start to finish of matches.”

The Olympic volleyball schedule for beach and indoor is not complete yet.

Parkinson will join CBC as early as this month, for coverage of the Canadian men’s matches during the 2016 FIVB World League, a 36-country competition from June 17 to July 17.

Canada will face China, Egypt and host Czech Republic June 17, 18 and 19, then Korea, China and Porgutgal, June 24 to 26, in Saskatoon, followed by Cuba, Portugal and Finland in Finland, July 1 to 3. The top four teams from the group will advance to the final four in Matosinhos, Portugal, starting July 9.

“I’m particularly excited because this is the first time I will have the privilege of calling Canadian indoor men’s volleyball at the Olympic Games. It should be quite a spectacle and a fantastic exhibition of volleyball and beach volleyball at its finest.”
