Vernon’s Hannah Bennison is one of the fastest girls in Canada.
Bennison finished fourth in the U16 2,000-metre race at the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Langley.
She raced with 18 other runners and crossed the finish line with a time of six minutes and 25 seconds, only 11 seconds behind the leader, Shona McCulloch of Ont.
Sophie Sigfstead of Alta. finished eight seconds ahead of Bennison in third.
The Vernon AAA track and field club member burst out of the blocks and carried the lead for the first three laps. The current provincial champion was the fastest from B.C. in her age group.
In mid-July, Bennison, a VSS student, won the women’s 14-15 B.C. Athletics 2,000-metre provincial championship race in Kamloops.
Bennison beat a field of 14 with a time of six minutes, 28 seconds, four seconds shy of equalling her personal best. Some races at the championships were moved to the evening because of extreme heat in the afternoon.
