The Summerland Secondary School Grade 9 girls basketball team has qualified for the Grade 9 Girls Provincial Championships.

The championships will be held in Vancouver Feb. 23 to 25.

The top 16 teams from around the province will compete.

The Summerland girls attended the Grade 8 Provincials last year in Pitt Meadows and their return marks the first time a Summerland Secondary Team has qualified for Grade 9 Provincials.

The team is made up of three Grade 8s and seven Grade 9s. This is unique in that the girls competed in the South Okanagan Junior League, comprised of Grade 9 and 10 teams.

Despite the team’s youth, they were dominant in the regular season in league play. Moreover, the team attended four Grade 10 Tournaments, reaching the championship final three times.

“Despite our youth, we more than competed against older teams all season long,” said head coach Tama Corday. “This group has been together since they were in Grade 5 and 6, and have dedicated hundreds of hours in season as well as in spring league and summer camps.”

Assistant coach Jason Corday said the team has some tall, athletic players.

These include 6’0” post Jaqueline Mansiere and 5’11 post Karrah Roelfsema as well as 5’9 forward Brinay Burdick, who is only in Grade 8.

“This is a special group made up of exceptional young ladies who are tremendous athletes,” said assistant coach Jason Corday.

Other players include Grade 8 point guard Lexi Corday, the team’s leading scorer and leader in assists.

Others include Grade 9 guards Olivia Harrold and Navi Hughes as well as Laska Hughes, Alyssa Robinson, Paige Russil and Rowan Knowles.

“The girls are excited at the opportunity to attend the Provincial Championships for the second year in a row,” Tama Corday said. “Last year they competed against some of the best Grade 8 teams in the province and had success, that built their confidence. This year, the team goes down with the mindset that they have the talent and ability to beat any team if they execute and play with confidence.”
