The Aldergrove Kodiaks won their sixth game in a row Monday night beating the Shaw Conference leading Delta Ice Hawks by a score of 5-2 in Richmond as part of the Winter Classic.
The squad sits top of the standings with 27 wins in 33 games. Their nearest rivals, the Abbotsford Pilots, have posted 20 wins in 34 games.
“The Bears outshot the Hawks 14-8 in the first frame but took until the 16:17 mark to register the only goal of the period,” said coach Rick Harkins of the Jan. 2 game.
Aldergrove had the better of the play in the second period, scoring twice to take a 3-0 lead before the Hawks reduced the margin to 3-1.
“But with just eight seconds left in the period Aldergrove scored again to take a 4-1 lead into the final frame,” he noted.
Delta tried to fight its way back in the third period, scoring just a minute in and outshot the Bears 12-11, but the Kodiaks responded with just under five minutes left to make it a 5-2 win.
Aldergrove outshot Delta 36-28.
Langley boy Eric Callegari scored his league leading 24th goal and added three assists which was good enough for first star and gave the 160-lb. forward an eight-point lead in the scoring race with 61 points. Cameron Daviit trails Callegari by just nine points.
Kyle Bosko, the Kodiaks 170 lb. forward, took second star with one assist. Derian White scored twice in the win.
The Kodiaks host the North Van Wolf Pack on Jan. 11 (after presstime). Then it’s an away game against the Ridge Meadows Flames Friday the 13th. The Kodiaks next hit home ice Jan. 18 at 7:15 in the Aldergrove Arena when they host the Abbotsford Pilots.
