Fraser Valley Selects U15 win big in South Surrey

A group of soccer players from Abbotsford are Provincial A Cup Champions, after helping the U-15 Fraser Valley Selects take the title this past weekend.

Sixteen players made up the roster for the Fraser Valley Selects this past season.

Seven of the players are from Abbotsford and all are alums of the Abbotsford Soccer Association program. They are Navjot Bhatti, Jordi Jura-Burke, Charnjot Grewal, Trystan Castro, Tyler Prokuda-Schnell, Braden Smith and Gurvir Grewal.

The Fraser Valley Selects team traveled to South Surrey for the Provincial A Cup, that included the Vancouver Island Premier League (VIPL), Storm, Kelowna United Junior Heat, and the Port Moody AC Selects.

The Fraser Valley Selects went 3-0 in round robin play, beating Kelowna United 2-0, the VIPL Storm 3-1, and Port Moody AC 5-1. This record gave them a berth in the championship game on Sunday, where they faced the Kelowna United Junior Heat once again. When the final whistle blew it was a 3-0 victory for the Fraser Valley Selects.

Smith had two goals and one assist in the four games. Bhatti helped with a goal, while Castro and Jura-Burke each helped with four assists apiece. The back line, consisting of assistant captain G. Grewal, C. Grewal and Prokuda-Schnell, stood strong and helped keep the shots from the opposition to a minimum.

This capped off a successful season that saw the Fraser Valley Selects defend their first place finish in the BC Coastal Soccer League Metro Division for the second year in a row. The team was coached by Dave Corke and Gary Lau.
