The new Abbotsford Jets spring hockey program debuts this April.

Abbotsford Jets spring hockey program launches

New hockey program kicks off on April 7 at the Abbotsford Ice Rink

A brand new spring hockey program is landing in Abbotsford.

The Abbotsford Jets program is set to launch next spring, focusing on skills development, three-on-three intra-squad games and a balanced schedule leaving players the option to play other sports.

Program director Dustin May said a spring program was needed in Abbotsford.

“My son is in the 2007 birth year and I was looking for further development through the spring season,” he said. “As I looked into spring options I was surprised by the lack of programs here in Abbotsford and what felt to me a game vs skill development focus. I also felt there was a gap in the market, a spring hockey program that allows players to play a second sport and/or spend more time with the family outside of the rink. Both of these things I believe are important.”

The program will have a group of consistent coaches leading the planned 75-minute sessions, along with several guest coaches. Practice sessions will include work on shooting and scoring, power skating, puck protection and offensive and defensive tactics.

There is space for 16 players and two goalies, but space is already 50 per cent filled. The program runs Saturdays starting on April 7 and running to June 9 at the Abbotsford Ice Rink on South Fraser Way.
