Super mayor

While there’s plenty of responsibility on the shoulders of councillors, there are some particular expectations placed on mayors, and in roughly three months, both the City of Parksville and the Town of Qualicum Beach will have newly elected mayors.

That’s not to mention new faces on council, school board, and regional district board.

This week five-term Mayor Teunis Westbroek announced he would be seeking a sixth term in his 19th year at the helm.

Westbroek says he loves the job and serving the needs of the town residents.

He will be challenged by Anne Skipsey who will be completing her first term as a town councillor.

In the City of Parksville, Mayor Marc Lefebvre announced last month he will not be seeking a second term as mayor when municipal elections roll around this fall. In making his announcement, Lefebvre endorsed first term Councillor Kirk Oates who will be offering his candidacy for mayor in October.

Maybe a good question is why would anyone want to run for mayor? It’s a tough, challenging and sometimes thankless job.

After witnessing politicians bearing the wrath of citizens who oppose the direction the municipality is taking lately, who would in their right mind want this job?

We digress.

It’s early, so there may be others vying for the mayor’s chairs in these communities.

The impending campaigns have us asking, “What qualities would the ideal mayor possess?”

We doubt that “Super Mayor” exists, but if he or she did, what would they bring to the table?

They need to represent us in public and to other municipalities, as well as serve as a voice of council decisions, direction and reason for council.

The Mayor can often set the tone and direction for staff as well. That in turn, sets direction for the municipality, its growth, its projects, and its future.

We figure our “Super Mayor” needs to be dialed into the top issues facing municipalities today.

We see those as poverty and affordable housing.

If you are to choose one candidate this coming October for Mayor, you must do your due diligence to know more about the person you want to represent you.
