For too long the bloc vote of the Gang of Four currently dominating municipal politics has rubber-stamped the piecemeal destruction of viable houses, trees, and mature gardens for the benefit of developers, and it has evaded serious discussion of looming infrastructural collapse. Its record of financial transparency and public consultation is so abysmal that it has been condemned in a recent report by the B.C. Ombudsperson.
Oak Bay needs a housing strategy based on best environmental practices, a realistic approach to infrastructure renewal, and an accountable mayor and council. The hole-and-corner shenanigans of the current mayor and his supporters amount to a betrayal of Oak Bay. We can do better.
