Environmentalists and politicians have failed. It is not their field, so the result should not be surprising. Energy is the field; understand it, view choices, then choose. Economic choices for significant change in major energy fields (transport, power, heating) are available.
For example transport. Vehicles: plug-in hybrid 60 to 90 per cent less fuel; hybrids 50 per cent less; and electric use no fuel. All have longer life than regular cars. Replace current vehicles with these, and an 80 per cent fuel reduction is probable. Average vehicle age is 10 years, so the timeframe is 10 years. Fuel consumption in Canada, 60 billion liters/year, reduced to 12.
Reason to change is economic, benefitting every person, company and industry.
B.C. is an example of how to initiate but not execute change. B.C. carbon tax revenue is sufficient to rebate each vehicle $0 to $13,000 (average $6,500) — an incentive to purchase an energy efficient vehicle. In the last six years B.C. carbon tax revenue exceeded $6 billion but under $6 million was spent on vehicle rebates.
B.C. legislation on clean energy is clear; carbon tax as incentive, however, revenue is redirected by trustees with no fuel/carbon reductions to date! Carbon tax is not a hardship and is capable of paying for change: a net benefit for those that change. Responsibility is with each person to ensure leadership is just that.
