Measure your candidates

Editor John Harding is to be commended for his recent editorial comment respecting the local municipal elections in Parksville and Qualicum Beach.

In particular, his Oct. 23 editorial (‘Take a stance’) provides a very clear statement that we, the tax-paying electors, must demand that our candidates be specific about their reasons for running for office and their positions on objective, measurable, plans and goals for their term in office.

The Qualicum Beach electors may achieve a respectable voting turnout, but events of the past three years have demonstrated that perhaps we were too gullible in 2011, or simply failed to put into practice what Harding recommended in his editorial.

Hopefully, his wise words will be well read and put into practice as the “X” is placed against a name on the ballot for those aspiring to guide out town for the next four years.

For many years I have advocated “what gets measured, gets done.” In this case, if we don’t assess what a candidate offers and measure them as to how they do it, then we deserve what gets done by them.
