Re: Surrey First spent $1.18M for sweep, Feb. 24.
Reading about Surrey First spending $1.18 million to buy the election raises a couple of unfortunate conclusions:
1. Money can buy elections. What does that say for our representation? The poor, or even those of modest income, cannot compete.
2. Corporate entities – developers in this case – are the major contributors. Do we expect there will be no quid pro quo in the decisions their council makes?
While we may not be as bad as the U.S. and their permissive money rules, and their massive lobby system, something tells me civic elections in Canada should not operate this way.
