Re: West Kelowna City Hall.
I have a novel, or maybe even a revolutionary, idea. Why not use a portion of the land that is sitting idle and has already been purchased for a forthcoming hospital, which seems like it is still in the far distant future.
That way, some of the land can be utilized now instead of costing tax payers just to sit there. I would think that the area would be sizable enough to accommodate both facilities.
When building the new City Hall, it might be an idea to build a two-storey building with the city hall portion being on the second floor and the lower level to be designated for shops. What business wouldn’t mind having that foot traffic passing their doors while people go about their business with City Hall.
The other benefit of this would be once the cost of building has been paid, the shops would generate rental income for the municipality which could be used to offset the cost of the operation of the building.
As I see it, this would be a winning combination for the municipality, the businesses incorporated within the building and taxpayers . It might even turn out to be almost self-supporting through the rents paid.
Another advantage would be the project could be started much sooner as a big expenditure would not have to be made to buying any land and thus eliminate delays over pricing and the myriad of delays involved in possibly acquiring a pre-existing premise.
