Letter: Thank you for supporting the arts in Quesnel

Art Walk organizers are planning to expand the event next year

On behalf of the Quesnel and District Community Arts Council, the Quesnel Art Gallery and Gift Shop and the Quesnel Downtown Association, we would like to thank all of the artists, businesses and viewers/participants that helped to make Art Walk 2020 such a success. The Art Walk was a part our 2020 Culture Days activities.

Due to COVID-19, the whole arts community has been thrown into a sort of lock-down. The committee thought a self-guided Art Walk would be a fantastic way to celebrate the arts and support our local business community, which always supports us.

The Community Spirit Mural, a Quesnel Art Gallery project, was created with the help of many sponsors and the creativity of the people of Quesnel. The mural was unveiled and graces the AC&D Insurance building at the head of Reid Street. The grand opening of the Art Walk included the unveiling and was supported by the musical accompaniment of the voices of AkaBellas and a small group of artists, families and friends. Due again to COVID, advertising was reduced, as a crowd was unwanted, but the mural is a permanent addition to the public art in Quesnel.

Thank you as well to the Quesnel Cariboo Observer for printing the booklets and supporting the project. One response to our post-walk survey was that we did not have enough of them, so our plans for next year will include a higher number to be available to the public. We also plan to expand into the West Quesnel and South Quesnel area, with planning beginning much earlier in the year.

People that took part in the Art Walk had a chance to win one of four baskets. Thank you to the downtown businesses that donated over $1,728 in merchandise. Congratulations to the folks whose names were drawn: Shirley Brown, Dean Unrau, Dwayne Robertson and Priscilla Pollock.

Continue to watch for Arts Council activities, and, please, continue to support our local Art Gallery, as well as all our local businesses!
