LETTER: Tenant insurance is an absolute must

It seems every few weeks lately there is yet another story of a family losing everything in a home fire, and then the revelation that they had no tenant fire insurance. The community responds, a fund is set up, donations are accepted of cash, clothing and household items.

This is all fine, but why do people not get their priorities right and have the proper insurance?

Various spokespeople from a number of fire departments have been quoted as saying that this needs to be done, for prices ranging from only $200 to $500 annually.

It is difficult to have sympathy for those who lost everything and have no insurance if instead they decided to put this money into lower priorities such as smoking, or booze, or lottery tickets, meals out, cable TV, or a fancy cellphone plan.

Tenant insurance needs to be an absolute must for any landlord who rents to someone, and failure by a tenant to provide proof of such insurance should perhaps be grounds for eviction.
