LETTER: Governments are non-secular

The rule of secular government, fortunately, exists to protect the rest of us from their propaganda...

Further to Mr. Peachey’s letter, “should city endorse what some consider immoral?” I offer this letter in rebuttal.

The content was not surprising. It is an unfortunate truth that those of a conservative and/or fundamental religious bent tend to be more vocal than those of a more liberal persuasion, especially here in Abbotsford.

First, the statement that people who identify with LGBTQ have an “anything goes” attitude towards sex is inaccurate. There are no facts in evidence to support such a statement. While it may be true that “bible-believing Christians” hold that opinion, it is presumptuous to assume everyone does.

Next, as to whether our city should be supporting the pride week, the answer is simple. Governments in Canada are non-secular. We separate church and state because of people like Mr. Peachey. Their private opinions are their own business, no matter if they are hateful, discriminatory, or wrong-headed (supporting pride week does not send a message of sexual immorality to the city’s youth and not everyone in Abbotsford is a “bible-believing Christian”).

These people can implement discriminatory and prejudicial policies in their homes and churches if they wish. The rule of secular government, fortunately, exists to protect the rest of us from their propaganda.
