This month BC Hydro will start installing smart meters on homes throughout Victoria.
If you have any concerns about these wireless meters you cancontact BC Hydro and have the installation delayed until a mutually beneficial alternative solution is found.
After you inform them of your concerns BC Hydro will then add comments on your account so that the meter will not be installed. It is also advisable to place a note on your hydro meter stating that you have contacted BC Hydro and a smart meter is not to be installed.
A BC Hydro smart meter representative has stated “We do understand that some customers do have some concerns about technology and that there are some people who are sensitive to wireless technology and in those cases we will work directly with those customers to find mutually beneficial solutions so we can still service them.”
In addition, “time of use billing” is coming much faster than you might think.
BC Hydro’s smart meter business plan describes in detail how it plans to have everything in place and be ready to introduce “time of use billing” on July 1, 2012, pending BC Utilities Commission approval. The BCUC is expecting BC Hydro’s application shortly.
So if you have concerns and do not want a smart meter installed on or near you home, contact BC Hydro at 1-888-964-9376. They may try to talk you out of your decision, but be insistent and you will gain some time to find a better solution.
