City council censoring Empire Days, in a way

I find it hard to believe the City of Nanaimo withheld a grant to a society over its name.

To the Editor,

Re: Grant withheld over society’s name, Jan. 22.

I find it hard to believe the City of Nanaimo withheld a grant to a society over its name. Especially a society that dates back to 1863. A society that has a history in Nanaimo and a history of getting grants.

I think it is a slippery slope when tax dollar grants are given or not given based on the name of an organization.

Then to say that we would support the event if the name was changed is rife with discrimination. Would the council vote against the conference centre hotel if it was going to be called the Empire Hotel or the British Empire Hotel? Did we not learn anything from the conference centre’s Leadercast problem last year? We are supposed to be in a free country without censorship by any level of government. Approve or disapprove grants on merit, not on name. Censorship is wrong no matter if you think the cause is just or not.
