Canadians must learn from history

To the Editor:

Thank you, Pat Martin (“Canada is not, and shouldn’t be, part of U.S.A.”) and all the Canada Day protestors, for getting a message to MP David Willks about Bill C-38. On Canada Day, I had a chance to discuss Bill C-38 with him and express my opinion.

Of course, Bill C-38 is about so much more than our sovereignty. By using allocations to limit debate, the Harper Conservatives again showed their contempt of Parliament. Bill C-38 eviscerates many of Canada’s historic environmental laws so that unrestrained economic development at the expense of environmental protection can take place.

Some cabinet ministers have called anybody who stands up to protect the Earth and wants a livable future for our children “radicals” and “extremists”. The Harper Conservatives are at war with Canadians who want to protect our resources for future generations. It was very appropriate for Pat and the Canada Day protestors to carry a banner stating Albert Einstein’s wisdom, “The world is a dangerous place to live because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”

Wilks spoke up against Bill C-38 but in the end did not have the courage to vote against it. Einstein was well aware of what would happen to his country, Germany, and also Europe and how dangerous it would become because of the people who didn’t do anything about it. Have we learned from history? We Canadians still have a chance to do something about it.
