KERTON, Viola (nee Martinelli)
1919 ~ 2011
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sweet mother, Viola Kerton on May 16th, 2011.
Viola was born in Cumberland General Hospital, September 5, 1919. Mom was the eldest of three children of Girolomo and Adelia Martinelli. Her father was killed in the 1923, Number 4 mine explosion. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon in 2008 after nearly 69 years of marriage, and by her twin brothers Frank (Swede) in 1981 and Fred (Woppy) in 1992.
Viola married Sgt Gordon Kerton (Cdn Scottish Regt) at a military wedding in Courtenay September 15th, 1939. She was a wonderful Mother to her 6 children, Fran (Don) hart, Judy Pederson, Fred, Pat (Sam) Salomi, Terry (Sandra), Penny (Dan) Peters, and a loving grandmother to her many grand/great grandchildren.
Viola and Gord raised their family in Cumberland before moving to Powell River in 1965. She made many dear friends over the years, both on Vancouver Island and Powell River, and cherished them all. Some of her fondest memories were of years living in Rock Bay and her summers at the cabin on Powell Lake with family and friends. In their later years, mom and dad got the travelling bug, and ventured to far away lands such as Russia and China. Mom loved puttering in her garden, and, of course, the teapot was always on and the cards shuffled, ready for a game at any time. “Vi’s Casino” was always open.
A heart-felt Thank You to all her ‘girls’ at the Olive Devaud Sunshine Unit for the wonderful love and care given to Mom. She loved you all, and it meant so much to us. There will be no service by request.
“Shoot the Sherbert to Me, Herbert!”
We love you Mom – Kiss Dad for us!
