Thomas Michael Mason

Thomas Michael (Tom) Mason, 98, died peacefully in his Vernon home on February 25, 2018. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he retired as Chief Warrant Officer in 1977. Tom was born December 20, 1919 in Wayne, Alberta to Joseph Mikulosik and Anna Gabara. He worked in the coal mines in Wayne near Drumheller before enlisting in 1939.

As a member of the Calgary Highlanders, Tom arrived in England in September of 1940 eventually serving with the 8th Canadian Reconnaissance commonly called the 8th Recce. The 8th Recce landed in Normandy after the beach was secured and participated in the liberation of Caen and surrounding areas including the village of Louvigny. Here Tom met Mr Hollier-Larousse (of French Dictionary fame) and his teenage son, Thierry both members of the French Resistance. In later years, Thierry and his wife were guests of Tom and Gladys in Vernon and the Masons were hosted by them during several visits to France.

In 1949 Tom enlisted in Canada’s new Paratroop Army, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and did a tour of duty in Korea. He then transferred to Adm/Logistics until July, 1977 when he retired but continued to serve at the Vernon Army Camp as NPFO a further 26 summers. Tom’s work at the Army camp frequently took him to the employment office for summer staff where he not only found Gladys but also a permanent job!

Tom and Gladys made their home in Vernon where they were active members of the 8th Recce Alumni Association and organized many reunions. They enjoyed golf and travelling, especially their winter home in Desert Hot Springs. Tom was a swimmer and swam the length of Kalamalka Lake more than once. Tom was generous, wise and didn’t like a fuss.

Tom is survived by his wife, Gladys, son, Thomas Jr. (Mary), daughter Carol, granddaughter Kaye, step-sons, Brian and Keith, 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grands with another on the way, 4 great great-grands, niece, Carolyn and other family.

He was predeceased by a young son, Alan Robert, step-son, Greg, first wife, Miriel and his brothers and sisters.

At Tom’s request cremation has taken place and there will not be a service.
