Stanley Herbert Garner passed away on July 5th, 2019 in Chilliwack, B.C. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm Saturday, July 20th, 2019 at St. John’s Anglican Church, Sardis with Rev. Allan Carson officiating. Interment to follow in the Church’s Memorial Garden. Reception to follow.
Stan was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Herbert and Ethel Garner on April 12, 1930. He was raised on the banks of the Red River. He married Irene in Winnipeg on November 5, 1955 in the middle of a snow storm. They were married 59 years till Irene’s passing in 2014. Stan started his career with CN Rail in 1966 as a Train Porter. In 1969 he and his young family moved from Winnipeg to Menzies Street, Chilliwack. Stan commuted to the CN Rail Yard for 20 years. With CN Rail, he moved up the ranks from Porter to General Yard Master.
Stan had many hobbies and interests. He could be found on his favorite golf course, the Kinkora, throwing rocks at the Chilliwack Curling Club, lawn bowling and carpet bowling at St. Thomas Church Hall. He and Irene travelled all over Canada and the United States. Many trips were made back to Winnipeg to visit close family and friends. Stan was a long time member of St. John’s Anglican Church serving and volunteering in many capacities. Five years ago Stan began his battle with dementia and this put an end to his many activities.
Stan is predeceased by his wife Irene (2014), infant daughter Elaine (1958), brother Gilbert (2011) and sister-in-law Marge (2015). Stan is survived and lovingly remembered by his children Lynda Fontaine (Brian Rumsey), Bert Garner (Paddye Garner), Mike and Colleen Garner. He will be missed by his loving sister Shirley and brother-in-law Reg Romans. He leaves behind his grandchildren Lorraine (Vince) Egresits, Christine (Nathan) Harrison, Valerie Rumsey, Katelyn (Scott) Stewart, Sarah (Scott) Harrison, Adam Garner, Marie (Gary) Baars, Jillian (Dawson) Procee, Emily (Tyler) Frose and many great grandchildren.
Stan’s family wishes to extend sincere thanks and appreciation for the kind and considerate care he received from the staff and home care aides at the Birchwood Home and The Cascade Lodge.
