It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our cherished wife, mother, daughter and sister Shelley Ann Budgen in the North Okanagan Hospice House on July 13th, 2016 at the age of 46 years. Shelley will be lovingly remembered by her husband Mark and their three children, Ashley (14), Kaitlyn (12) and Cole (9). She will be sorely missed by her parents, Doug and Ann Morrison, her sisters Stephanie (Dan) Curtis, Meghan (Layne) Bureau and Erin (John) McLeod, her grandmother Agnes Reilander, her father and mother in-law, Sandy and Carol Budgen, sisters in-law Krista (Nigel) Maccagno, Melanie (Mark) Piorecky and Julie (Matt Johnson) Budgen, her grandfather in-law Gordon Butterfield and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Shelley was born in Nelson, B.C. on March 7th, 1970 to Doug and Ann and shortly thereafter moved to Vernon. She attended St. James Elementary and Vernon Secondary School where she excelled in all sports especially basketball. Upon graduation in 1988, Shelley continued her studies at the University of Victoria and the University of Calgary where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Education respectively. While at the University of Calgary she met Mark and they were married on July 26th, 1997 and settled in Vernon.
Shelley was an educator. During her 21 year teaching career, Shelley worked at Vernon Secondary, Kalamalka Secondary, Kidston Elementary and most recently at Silver Star Elementary. She sought to make a difference in her own quiet way. She chose to look at the positive in all situations regardless of her own circumstance. Shelley set an example of calmness, integrity, decency and bravery in all aspects of her professional and private life.
Shelley was a coach. Every year she coached basketball, volleyball, track and field, cross country running or some combination of the above. There were occasions when she was coaching both a boys and girls team at the same time in different leagues. She truly had a passion for kids and sport and has imparted that passion for sport to her children.
Shelley was first and foremost a Mom. She took time off from her career to be at home with her children during their formative years. Before she passed, Shelley told Mark that her most favorite thing in the world was being a Mom to her children. She especially loved to watch them practice or play their chosen sports.
Prayers will be recited at St. James Catholic Church on Thursday, July 21st, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church on Friday, July 22nd, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. with Father Dale Normandeau celebrant. A Reception will follow in the St. James Catholic School Parish Centre.
As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Shelley to the Vernon Chapter of KidSport, helping children in need participate in sports. This was one of Shelley’s greatest passions!
