Richard Lloyd Walters

Richard Lloyd Walters

Richard Lloyd Walters passed away suddenly on December 26, 2009 at the age of 45 years. Richard was born on July 6, 1964 in Epping, England and moved with his family to Salmon Arm in 1965. Richard was a motivated, hardworking and intelligent young man and showed great aptitude for education. Richard also had a great passion for sports, particularly golf, hockey and soccer, which he excelled at. Upon graduating from Salmon Arm Senior High in 1982 Richard enrolled in University of British Columbia from which he received a Bachelor of Science, with honours, in Geography in May of 1986. Richard later obtained a Bachelor of Science with Specialization in Meteorology from the University of Alberta in June 1988.

After graduation Richard embarked on a career with Environment Canada as a meteorologist that took him to Toronto, Edmonton, Whitehorse and Kelowna. In the Fall of 1995 Richard’s life drastically changed with the onset of Multiple Sclerosis, which severely impaired his ability to continue his working life. He was forced to medically retire in 1998 and moved back to Salmon Arm to be with family in 2000. Soon after moving here Richard became an integral part of the local MS community, both in fundraising and raising awareness. His outgoing nature and affinity for conversation led to his daily trip to the local coffee shops in search of meeting friends, old and new.

A celebration of life service was held from the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home on Monday afternoon, January 4, 2010 with Jack Bowers officiating. Tributes were shared by family and friends, including Barry MacKay, Glenn Verdurmen, Wyn Gittins, Glyn, Gwil and Alun Walters.

Cremation with interment to follow in the family plot at Mt. Ida Cemetery.

Honourary pallbearers were John Damon, Barry MacKay, Neil Mix, Curt Olson, Laurent Roy, Glenn Verdurmen.
