Rev. W.G.Stanley

(Stan) Spence

16 March 1930 – 18 January 2017

It is with much sorrow that we announce the passing of Stan Spence, 86, at Nanaimo Hospital on Wednesday January 18, 2017.

Stan was born in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.  In June 1956 he was ordained a Methodist Minister, and a month later he married Penny Stanley, of Lismore, Ireland.  They embarked as missionaries to serve in Haiti, where they lived for ten years, bearing son Peter and daughter Janet while there.  In 1966 they returned to Ireland, then in 1972 they immigrated to Canada, where Stan took a post with the United Church of Canada in Bowden, Alberta. In 1980 he became an Educational Psychologist with the Red Deer School District, from which he retired in 1992 to relocate to Nanoose Bay.

Stan enjoyed his retirement, helping to establish the first Probus Club in Nanoose Bay , forming an Apple computer society, learning to sail, playing bridge and forming long and enduring friendships.  At all times he remained a committed Christian, offering support and comfort to all those who sought his assistance.

He will be remembered fondly by those he helped, not least the thousands of people in Haiti  he assisted in the clinics, schools and churches he founded there.

 We will miss him terribly.

A Celebration of Life  will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Nanoose Bay, at 1.00 p.m. on Friday 27 January 2017.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Stan should be given to Prostate Cancer Canada.
