It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Irene Shirley Savoie at Shuswap Lake General Hospital on March 21, 2016. For the past year, Shirley has resided at Lakeside Manor on Harbourfront Drive where she enjoyed meeting new and old friends, playing bridge and watching the birds she so loved on the lake.
Shirley was born in Toronto on September 6, 1932, the eldest of six children of Joseph Savoie and Therese Savoie.
The family moved to Moncton, New Brunwick in 1945 where Shirley attended boarding school and later graduated from High School.
Nursing School followed in 1953 at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Moncton, NB. She obtained a post-op Nursing Diploma in OR Nursing at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, BC. In 1970 she attended Seattle University obtaining a baccalaureate degree with distinction and admitted to membership in Sigma Theta Tau Honorary Nursing Sorority. She worked in several Provinces in various positions as Staff Nurse, Head Nurse, Supervisor and Director of Nursing.
After several years in Dawson Creek and Edmonton, she arrived in Salmon Arm (1973) and filled the position of Director of Nursing, retiring in 1993. She was known as an exemplary leader who was always approachable and fair in dealing with “her gals” as she loved to recall. Her quest for safe standards of care and excellence in Nursing Practice was evident to all and she strove to make solid decisions with those standards in mind despite changing times and fiscal cutbacks. She was a valued member of The Nurse Administrators of BC and did committee work for the former RNABC, now the College of Nurses of BC.
Her interests were wide and varied she loved to entertain and held many great evenings at her different homes in the presence of good friends, with great food, humor and lively conversations. She loved to read, loved music (especially opera) and most of all loved her little dogs. She showered them with excellent care and so much love.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, and two brothers Ross and Ernie.
Surviving members are brother Norman Savoie of Oxford, Mass. USA, sister Carol (Tom) Colaccio, Berlin, Mass, sister Yvette (Ronald) Doucett, Northboro, Mass, many nieces and nephews and a large extended family in BC and devoted friends.
A Celebration of life will be held on Thursday afternoon, April 7, 2016 at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with a reception to follow in the Mountainside room.
Many thanks to Doctors Levins, Reid and Main, and the nurses of Shuswap Lake General for their compassionate and loving care.
