Mark Francis Lueke, age 46, died on February 1, 2011 in Nanaimo after a short, courageous battle with cancer.

Mark was born on March 23, 1964 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. He lived in Bruno, SK before moving to Saskatoon, SK in grade school, finishing high school in Princeton, BC. Mark received his Bachelor of Physical Education from UBC in 1988, his Bachelor of Education from UBC in 1989, and his Masters in Education from San Diego State University in 2001.

Mark leaves behind his wife of 17 years, Lynn, a partner in Harewood Dental Clinic in Nanaimo. Survivors in his immediate family are sisters Paulette (Mill Valley, CA), Theresa (Coldstream, BC), Karen (Nelson, BC) and brothers Eric (Norwalk, CA) and Roderick (North Battleford, SK). He is further survived by his niece, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He is predeceased by his parents Arthur and Theresa Lueke.

Mark taught for almost two decades at Dover Bay Secondary School in Nanaimo. He was an active outdoors man and his recent passion was sailing. He also loved kayaking, bicycling, hiking, hockey, and basketball. Mark’s hobbies included playing the guitar, composing songs and singing.

The phrases that friends use to describe Mark are; generous, big-hearted, with a great sense of humour. A strong man with blue eyes and a huge smile, he was easy to love and a joy to be with.

A celebration of Mark’s life was held in his home on February 4. His family requests in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the BC Cancer Foundation.
