Mark David Shaw, age 66, passed away peacefully on January 10th at home in his beloved Cultus Lake after a brief courageous battle with cancer.
Mark is survived by his mother Marie Shaw, his brother, Ian Shaw (sons Dominic and Danny), his sisters, Karen Shaw (son Sacha Goldman), Barbara Allen (children Cera Bollo, Derek Allen, Nicholas Allen), and sisters Elaine Shaw, Wendy Toohey and Susan Lister.
Mark was born July 1st, 1951 and grew up in Vancouver but spent every summer of his childhood at Cultus Lake. After graduating from Our Lady of Perpetual Help High School in 1969 he chose to forgo his studies at UBC to run the family grocery business (Shaw’s Supermarket).
After moving to Peru in 1990 he worked extensively on the development of the open source software package (OK Plasma) with the goal to help impoverished people in Peru and worldwide. In 2005, Mark returned to Cultus Lake where he soon became the principal caregiver for his mother, Anna-Marie Shaw.
Mark was an excellent cook and loved to entertain friends at their home in Cultus Lake. He had a very kind heart and quick wit and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of life will be held at the Cultus Lake Memorial Church, 74 Fir Street, Cultus Lake, BC on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 1:00 pm with a small reception to follow.
Mark was a humanitarian and humanist and respectful of all religious traditions.
He would welcome that you celebrate his life in the religious or non-religious tradition of your beliefs.
Mark’s family would like to extend their special appreciation to all his friends for their support particularly, Gwyll Goddard, Alex Tkach and Ian Biddeshi, as well as the staff at VGH, BCCA and CGH, and the numerous caregivers from Chillliwack Home support.
Memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the B.C. Cancer Foundation.
