Lorraine Elizabeth Moore (nee Church)

December 8, 1949 – February 9, 2021
On Tuesday, February 9th, 2021, Lorraine Elizabeth Moore (Church), loving wife and mother of two, passed away at the age of 71 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Lorraine was born December 8, 1949 in Richmond, British Columbia to Nancy Wallace (Archer) and Stuart ‘Stu’ Allen Church. She was a star athlete in high school, and particularly loved basketball.
Lorraine moved to Vancouver while attending the University of British Columbia, where she was studying to become a Phys Ed teacher. During that time she met William Michael ‘Mike’ Moore at a military dinner party, and the two were married in Vancouver in 1972.
Mike’s career in the Canadian Armed Forces moved them around the country, with postings in Trenton, Baldy Hughes, Chilliwack, Borden and Winnipeg. Everywhere they moved, Lorraine set about the making their house into a welcoming home and being a good neighbor. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed hosting friends at their home.
Lorraine’s faith was important to her, and she and Mike volunteered at the churches in the cities where they were posted. Lorraine chose to stay home with her kids and was always an active volunteer in their schools. She particularly enjoyed volunteering in school libraries and being a reading tutor. She was also an advocate for gifted children’s education.
Lorraine was incredibly creative. A talented sewer from the time she was in high school, she gave of her time to sew the costumes and uniforms for the kids’ school or other activities. She was a skilled stained-glass craftsperson, and her lamps and ornaments adorned their home.
As their kids got older, Lorraine took up quilting, and before long was teaching classes and encouraging others in this endeavor. Over the years, she sewed countless quilts for her family and friends, and her and Mike’s home was filled with her fabric art.
In 2002 Lorraine and Mike moved from Winnipeg to Nanaimo to enjoy their retirement with warmer weather, beautiful scenery and proximity to family. Lorraine joined the quilting guild and planted a big garden, and soon she was sharing home grown vegetables and baked goods with her new neighbors. Lorraine and Mike made frequent trips to Texas to visit their beloved children and grandchildren.
Lorraine is survived by her son Richard (Janice), daughter Victoria (Andrew Bishop), grandchildren Clara, Serena and Oliver Moore and Rebecca, Matthew and Peter Bishop, and siblings Roderick ‘Rod’ Church (Francie), Beverly ‘Bev’ (Douglas ‘Doug’ Morrison) and Patricia ‘Pat’ Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, William Michael ‘Mike’ Moore, her mother, Nancy, her father, Stuart, and her stepmother Barbara ‘Barb’ Haverton (Lord).
A family funeral was held on February 26, 2021 at Trinity Catholic Church in Nanaimo.Obituary-
