Lai Chu (Maria)
1926 – 2011
((Maria) Lai Chu was born in Kunming, Yunnan Province of China and passed away Jan. 11, 2011 at Noric House in Vernon. She attended Roman Catholic Convent School and attended Nursing School upon graduation. Lai Chu met and married Chu Shek during WWII and travelled all over china with him – flying fighter pilot missions. After the war, they settled in Hong Kong where they raised their three children: one son, Simon, and two daughters, Teresa (Hwang) and Crescentia (Wee).
In 1984, they moved from heavily populated Hong Kong to Vernon to be closer to their eldest daughter, Teresa, husband Ghee and their family. Lai Chu lived with them for six years, helping to care for her three grandchildren: Hamish, Christine, and Leona. Her son, Simon, his wife, Carmen, and daughter, Flora also immigrated to Vernon in 1994.
Lai Chu had been in Noric House for the past eleven years due to the progression of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. She was predeceased by her daughter, Crescentia, in 1987 and by husband, Chu Shek in 2001.
In lieu of flowers, those friends wishing to make memorial contributions in memory of Maria Lai Chu may do so to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation, 2101 – 32 Street, Vernon, BC V1T 5L2.
The Graveside Service will take place on Monday, January 17th, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in Pleasant Valley Cemetery with Father Dale Normandeau, Celebrant. A private dinner reception hosted by Nancy and Ben Chow for the celebration of Maria’s life will follow the same evening.
