ROONEY, Joyce Evelyn

1933 – 2016

Joyce was born in Tisdale Saskatchewan in 1933 to parents Matthew and Merna Fletcher. She and her older brother Bob had many fond memories of those early years picnicking with their mother and having cinnamon toast with their father before he would leave for work.

When Bob married Maria, Joyce instantly gained a sister. Their family grew to now include nephew Garry and his current wife Margo, and his children Nicole, Dustin (Shannon) and niece Debbie and her daughter Marliese.

Joyce graduated as a Registered Nurse in the 1954 B class at the University City Hospital in Saskatoon. She held a position there and at Tisdale Hospital. She had many close friends from that experience and helped with the alumni positions when she could. She continued her nursing career at Vancouver General Hospital while sharing an apartment with Bob and Maria.

Joyce was widowed to Ronald Harold Langley after 12 years of marriage and had close ties with his family whom they also shared accommodations.

Joyce married Patrick Rooney who worked for Canadian Pacific Railroad and had a large Irish family. His brother and sister lived with them and Joyce became especially close to Nick and his wife Paddy, as well as Rose and her family Allan, and sons Jason and Shane. A nephew Pat also lived with them while going to high school. Their one and only daughter Lorri – Joy was born in 1971 and they showered her with love.

When Patrick passed away in 1986, Joyce and Lorri became more than just mother and daughter, they became friends. Together, they built many wonderful memories with their close friends, the Hick’s family; Shirley, Roy, Roylene and Sarah which have grown to include Ian, Bethany, Isaiah, and Charlie also Yvonne Nilan and her son, Terry.

In 2001, Joyce gained a son in-law when Lorri married Douglas Sowerby. The Sowerby’s included Joyce in all their functions as another member of their family, something that Joyce treasured immensely, but nothing was treasured more than her one and only granddaughter, Jillian.

Joyce passed away peacefully on November 21st, 2016 with her daughter Lorri by her side. She had such wonderful hospital care. On the journey, she had many thoughtful and loyal neighbors and close friends. Special appreciation to Lorraine, Stacey and Julie.
