Jan Niklaas Voorsmit (John) passed away April 30, 2004 in Vernon Jubilee Hospital after suffering a stroke. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 35 years Bessie MacGillivray, his first wife Jean Conlin & their infant son, also his parents Berend Voorsmit & Geertje Veen, brother Dick & sister Nellie. Survived by step-son Jim (Betty) MacGillivray, step-daughter Maureen (Gary) Marko, grandchildren Lori & Brad Marko, Kevin (Lianna) MacGillivray, Kelly (Dave) Scott, great grandchildren Caelum & Rhiana Scott, Riley MacGillivray, Danielle Fraise, Jessica & Stephanie Miller. Also nephew Bob (Maureen) Pitzel, niece Trudy (Roy) Messing, niece Sandy (Roy) MacKenzie & nephew Larry (Val) Voorsmit, as well as cousins in Holland. John was born in Winnipeg, served in the RCAF during WWII & later settled in Vancouver as a jeweler. During a 6 yr. stint in Alert Bay John & Jean met & became good friends with Bessie & Jim MacGillivray. John & wife returned to Vancouver where John managed Eaton’s jewelry dept. Following Jean’s death John visited Vernon to renew old friendships & began courting Bessie, who was now widowed. They married the following year & John entered the real estate business in Vernon. John had many talents but was always known as a very caring man. He remained friends with many of his clients, even helping to do renos on houses he sold. For years John’s ‘harem’, a group of widowed friends of Bessie’s, depended on him for chauffeuring, shopping, fix it chores & furniture moving. For the last two years of Bessie’s life, John gave her total care, refusing to have her moved into a care facility. After her death John worked hard at rebuilding his life but he was lonely & several health problems interfered. Now Bessie has come to reclaim him. An open house will be held in John’s honor on May 22 from 2-5 pm, at the home of Jim & Betty MacGillivray, 3920 – 14th St., Vernon. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Vernon Hospice House.
