LESLIE, Ivan Melville
Born December 2, 1931 to Violet and Bill Leslie in the nurse’s room over the grocery store in Baldur, Manitoba. He attended school on the little rural school called Rose Hill. Ivan rode horse back to school in the summer and sled in the winter. He did not attend high school in Baldur, but went to work as the rural Hydro was being put in Manitoba; he dug holes and set poles. When the work ran out he went to Brandon and got a job driving a truck for MacArthur’s, delivering things around town. Betty also came to Brandon in 1949 working as a maid in the MacArthur home, as well as nurse maid for three children. She met Ivan when he came to the boss’s house to clear the snow. They both enjoyed old time music so they went to the dances at the Orange Hall. They were married at St. Paul’s Church on October 14, 1950 in Brandon, where they lived for 12 years having three children, Brian, Gordon and Sherree. Ivan earned his journeyman electrician’s papers and then they moved to Portage la Prairie. Ivan coached hockey and baseball for the kids and had the honour of umpiring the final of the Little League Tournament in Winnipeg; he called the game that night and the next day he watched himself on TV. Ivan should be very proud of his achievements over the years with just a grade nine education; everything he did, he did well. He will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed by his wife Betty of sixty years, his daughter Sherree Coulombe (Rory) of Carman, MB, sons Brian and Gordon (Julie) all of Saskatoon, SK; grandchildren: Jill (Nadine), Jeff (Tara), Amber, Ebbony (Calvin), Haille, Gavin and Ryan; great grandchildren: Kamryn, Tyler, Eyzek, Kinsley, Kimberly and Adam. Ivan passed away at Brandt’s Creek Mews on Friday, November 19, 2010, with Betty by his side as well as the nurses who looked after him with tender loving care. Thanks to Dr. Mike Banwell for his care. God bless you all. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com, 250-860-7077.
