Ina Sylvia Bedford

1927 ~ 2017

Born Ina Sylvia Mitchell in Oliver, BC on October 14, 1927, she passed away on February 23, 2017 in the Williams Lake Senior’s Village.

Her immediate family in Oliver consisted of an older brother Archie, and two younger sisters, Marion and Helen. In the Okanagan Valley her extended family was very large and her grandfather on her Mother’s side was Val Haynes, a well known pioneer. She always loved the Okanagan.

In 1945 when the war ended, Gordon James Bedford moved to Oliver to go into business with his brother Art in the Shell Oliver Garage on the Main Street. Ina and Gordon were married in July, 1946 and all of their four children were born in Oliver.

In 1957, the family relocated to the Dog Creek Airport where Gordon worked as a mechanic and Ina eventually became the cook for anybody who landed at the small airport and needed a meal. When the entire Airport was closed down, the family relocated to the present Williams Lake Airport where housing was provided by the Ministry of Transport.

Ina was active in the community, helping to organize parties for the families on the Airport, serving in many volunteer organizations and working in various businesses in Williams Lake. Both she and Gordon were avid curlers and the many trophies and prizes attest to their skills. They attended bonspiels all over BC from Prince George to Victoria.

They had been married 65 years when Gordon passed away in 2012.

Ina is survived by her daughter Sylvia Harry (James), daughter Lesley Lloyd (Bill) and son Charles Bedford (Janet). Also her sister, Helen Mitchell and eleven grandchildren, innumerable great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Frank, her husband Gordon and her brother, Archie and sister Marion.

There will be a service at St. Peter’s Anglican Church 549 Carson Drive at 2 pm, March 11, 2017.
