1918 – 2009
It is with sadness, the family announces the passing of their beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather on Monday, June 8, 2009.
Herb was born October 8, 1918 in Osoyoos, BC. Most of his life was spent on the family farm in Armstrong. He married Nellie, “his Jinka” as he fondly referred to her, on February 1, 1940 and they raised their children Barbara and Ken.
Herb enjoyed most of all his music, playing in several bands over the years. He was a very talented musician, even though he had no formal lessons, singing and playing the saxophone and clarinet. He worked many years in the forest industry and for Armstrong Sawmill as well as on the family farm. After retiring from the Sawmill, Herb made a successful career as a piano tuner. An avid gardener, Herb won many prizes at the I.P.E. for his vegetables.
Herb was predeceased by his parents Clifford and Maude, his beloved wife Nellie in 2006, sisters Margaret and Nina and brothers Charlie and Ottis. He is survived by siblings Betty, Laura, Cookie, Marion, Warren and Sam; daughter Barbara (Bob); son Ken (Arlene); grandchildren Susan (Martyn), Janine, Cindi (Nigel) and Allan (Lisa); step-grandson Gary (Nancy); great grandchildren Haille, Amy, Kianna and Ashley; many nieces, nephews and extended family. Herb will be greatly missed for his music and keen sense of humour.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Annan and the nursing staff at Pleasant Valley Manor, Herb’s home for the last several years, for their compassionate care and support. We wish to acknowledge and thank Jill Redmond for her special care and attention to Herb.
A Celebration of Herb’s life will take place in July, details will be announced at a later date. No flowers by request. Arrangement in the care of Personal Alternative Funeral Services, Armstrong 250 546-7237.
