Hazel Josephine “Jo”

(nee Cousins)

Passed away peacefully December 11, at Park Place in Ridge Meadows Hospital. She is survived by her loving husband Sherman of 50 years. Daughters Julie and Nancy, son-in-laws David (deceased) and Mario. Grandchildren Hannah and Reid. Brothers Earl Cousins and Gordon Cousins (Verna). Jo is predeceased by her two sisters, Clara (Babe) and Alice (Sister) and brother Frank, as well, there are many nieces and nephews.

Jo was born in Bengough Sask. Dec. 19, 1925. The youngest of six children, “Josie” had fond memories of growing up in the small town. Her father died when she was an infant. The family faced tough times on the prairies and moved to Vancouver when Jo was entering high school. She attended Brittania High graduating in 1942.

She worked for many years at Sterling Shipyards. She cherished her family time and music and singing was a large part of home life. She was a member of the Vancouver Operetta Society performing many shows throughout her career. Jo joined the B.C. Telephone Choir and later the Maple Ridge Choral Society.

Jo met Sherman in 1950, married in 1957 and together they enjoyed a full and exciting life together. They were active in the North Lonsdale United Church and school P.T.A.’s.

Jo volunteered at the Burnaby Village Museum, member of the Maple Ridge Historical Society and helped at many community events including Mountain Festival and B.C. Summer Games.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital, 3-West nurses, Garden View and Park Place staff, for your patience and kind care and attention to the comfort of Mom, thank you. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation.

A Memorial service will be held Friday, December 19th, 2008, 11:00 am at St. Andrew’s United Church, Dewdney Trunk Rd and 221st Street.
