Hanson, George Rodney
May 27, 1937 ~ April 10, 2017
George Rodney Hanson, known to family and friends as Rod, of Nanaimo, BC, passed away at Nanaimo General Hospital on Monday, April 10, 2017 surrounded by his family. Rod was 79, born on May 27, 1937 in Jasper, Alberta to Elsie and Anselm Hanson.
Rod is survived by his loving wife Yvette of 54 years and their 3 sons: Clayton (Melanie), Clinton (Nicole) and Bradley; grandchildren: Kayla-Marie, Joshua, Ashton and Ethan; sister: Rae (Fred) Lewis.
He attended Trail High School and the University of Edmonton for Chemistry. Rod worked as a mineral chemist at multiple mining locations in Canada and throughout the world. He also ran his own consulting business, again travelling to the DRC, where he was blessed to work with the Congolese people right up to the end.
Rod was always the person who stayed in the background, but had such a conviction for what he was doing and believed in. He had a quiet, comfortable strength that he carried with him wherever he went. He was always committed to his family, friends and working relationships, always there in the background quietly making things work. Rod was one of those people who didn’t have to be in the limelight of attention, he didn’t need it, but he was there when it counted.
Rod always had a lifelong love of the sea, fishing and boats, especially Boston Whalers.
No service as per Rod’s request. He had a life well lived and that is what we will celebrate and how he wanted to be remembered.
May he rest in peace, and may God accept all his kindness and reward him in Heaven as his new place.
Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Rod’s name.
