It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Hugh McDermid at Cascade Hospice, Chilliwack, after a short struggle with pulmonary fibrosis.
He is predeceased by his parents, George and Rosella and survived by his wife of 56 years, Pat, his sister Colleen (Jack), brother Don (Wendy), his sons Dan (Angie), Michael (Leanne), Kevin (Mary) and grandchildren Scott, Emily, Melissa, Cole (Hanna), Tessa and Kent.
Hugh was born in Comox, BC, and in 1946, his family moved to the McGuire Road farm in Sardis where he would live and work for most of his life. As a young man he worked in Vancouver for 2 years but came back home to dedicate himself to the challenges of dairy farming. He married Pat in 1961 and three sons appeared in the next four years. The early years were tough, but he enjoyed the outdoor work and his animals. The extended family always wanted to visit Hugh and the dairy farm. His son, Michael, joined him and they continued dairying until the farm sold in 2003.
Hugh enjoyed new cars, walking along the Vedder Canal and collecting golf balls, travelling in the RV with Pat and eating her wonderful cooking. He took on several big rug hooking projects in his retirement years and we all marveled at his perseverance. He was intensely proud of his family and took every opportunity to be with them and tell them he loved them. It is hard to overstate how much he will be missed. A special thank you to his caretakers at Cascade Hospice, and his physicians Dr. Smit, Dr. Chris and Dr. Wilson.
A gathering of remembrance will take place at a later date in Chilliwack. In lieu of flowers a donation would be appreciated to the Carman United Church Memorial and Endowment fund in his name.
