February 6, 2019
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Dad, Bernie Clarkson, on Wednesday, February 6, 2019. Bernie started his life in Victoria in 1929 with his parents, Arthur and Mary. He proved to be a very athletic young man and started playing many different sports with his family ‘team’ of six brothers and two sisters. Bernie loved to play baseball and softball and at one time tried out for the ‘big’ leagues but his favorite game was golf. The family had a hotly contested tourney in which they played each other for the coveted trophy. He may not have been able to drive the ball as far as his competitors, but his accuracy around the green was legendary.
Bernie’s lifelong work was teaching others – whether it be in a classroom or on the golf course. He started his teaching career by moving to the Nelson School District and by taking his first job in Ymir. Over time he taught in many different schools in the area and many different grade levels. Bernie attended summer school for many years in order to achieve his goal of being a school administrator. He is best known in this role as the Principal at South Nelson and Central Schools near the middle and end of his career. He enjoyed working with children and especially appreciated the staff members he worked with for so many years.
Bernie met the love of his life, Joy, in Nelson, and they had three children. Mary-Ann (Brian), Maureen (Tony) and Christopher (Kirby). He also had three grandchildren Bryan (Candice), Kristin (Trevor) and Kylie (Taylor) as well as two step grandchildren Erika (Joe) and Lindsay (Byron). His great grandchildren are Sloan and Isla. He was very proud of his family and extended family – the highlight of his life – and as others have said – if you were able to spend time with him – he treated you as part of the family.
Bernie and Joy’s best times were on the beach at their home in Nelson. Summers were spent entertaining visiting family members and friends. Many special memories were made during these times – especially for his children and grandchildren.
Bernie was predeceased by his wife Joy (2002), five of his brothers and one sister, as well as his parents. Dad – we wish you longer drives, shorter putts, and birdies on every hole. We miss you already.
There will be a Mass for Bernie at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate on February 23, 2019 at 1100 am and a celebration of his life at the beach at his home this summer.
