September 9, 1938 – April 19, 2021
Ben was a storyteller, outdoorsman, all around handyman, kind soul, and gentle giant. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He grew up wild and free in farmlands near Toronto with sister Barb and parents Philip and Margaret, although Ben was known as Jim out East and his father known as Ben.
He followed Barb out West after high school to work summers in the Rockies where he explored the forest trails on his own with a canoe on his back, to paddle the cold clear mountain lakes. Moving to Calgary he met his first wife, Janet, and was able to continue his love affair with the Rockies.
From there, they moved to Williams Lake where he built a family home just north of town. A self-reliant person, he taught himself all the skills necessary to construct a house from the ground up over the years. A generous man with his words, time and labour; he was deeply loved by his co-workers at Finning, the church community of St. Andrews, his friends, family, and neighbours.
After the passing of Janet he embarked on new adventures with a fellow nature lover, his second wife Shary, on many trips to connect with family and friends while camping, biking, and hiking. While he enjoyed time with his own thoughts to tinker on cars or other projects, he had an easy comradery and was happy and content wherever he was and whomever he was with.
And now he is on another adventure, beyond the curving trail ahead, exploring the lands beyond this life. We will catch up when we can, and share stories together.
He is survived by his wife Shary; his children Kim, Carm, and Phil; his step-children Laura, Diana, and Leah; and his grandchildren Janet, Kiran, Cole, Fergus, Hawksley, Nathan, Alison, and Liam.
As he embodied service to others, donations to a charity of your choice in his name are appreciated in lieu of flowers. Better yet, look to where you are needed and give someone a helping hand in his memory. His generous heart lives on in all we do.
