Witnesses jumped into action downtown Wednesday afternoon after seeing a multi-vehicle collision involving an unresponsive driver in an out-of-control vehicle.

“He must have had a seizure or was in a diabetic coma,” witness Shelley Webstad speculated moments after the crash.

Webstad, an employee at a nearby business, was at the corner of Third Avenue and Oliver Street when the incident occurred at around 2 p.m.

Webstad recounted the chaotic scene that unfolded to the Tribune.

“He hit a parked car and just kept going. Cars are going through the intersection, I’m chasing after the vehicle trying to stop traffic and hollering for people to help,” she said.

While travelling through the intersection along Third Avenue Webstad said the out-of-control SUV hit another car head on, which drove that car back into another vehicle.

The vehicle then continued on before crashing to a halt on the sidewalk beside Community Corner, which houses Cariboo Growers and the Downtown Williams Lake BIA, she said.

“We had to smash the back window out to get at him,” Webstad said. “He wasn’t conscious. He came to a little bit after we got to him.

“It really freaked me out. I’m trying to stop traffic, chase the vehicle and help this man at the same time.”

Shortly after, emergency crews arrived on scene where the driver of the vehicle was tended to by paramedics and taken to Cariboo Memorial Hospital.

It is not known at this time whether any injuries resulted from the crash.
