A Williams Lake man is in custody facing recommended charges of possession of stolen property, failure to remain at the scene of an accident and flight from police, North District RCMP media relations said in a press release issued Monday.

On Sunday, Dec. 28, the Quesnel RCMP received a report of a red pickup travelling north bound on Highway 97, approximately 55 kilometres south of Quesnel, being operated in an erratic manner at around 8:19 p.m.

At 9:35 p.m. a Quesnel RCMP officer observed the vehicle on Highway 97 in Quesnel.

The officer activated the emergency lights on his marked police vehicle in order to stop the suspect vehicle. The truck slowed, and appeared to be coming to a stop on Legion Drive, but turned right onto McLean Street and accelerated at a high rate of speed.

“Fearing for the public’s safety, the officer pulled over, turned off his emergency lights and did not pursue the suspect vehicle, but advised other officers as to what had just taken place,” the RCMP press release stated. “While pulled over, the officer observed the suspect vehicle fail to stop for a stop sign on McLean Street at the Carson Avenue intersection and the rear of the suspect vehicle was struck by another vehicle that was on Carson Avenue at the time, and was unable to stop in time.”

The suspect vehicle failed to stop after the collision, but the collision was immediately attended to by the officer who confirmed there were only minor injuries to the four occupants.

Within minutes the suspect was located on foot not far from the suspect vehicle and RCMP confirmed the truck had been stolen from Williams Lake earlier in the day.

The suspect is expected to appear in Quesnel Provincial Court on Monday, Dec. 19.
