The single concrete slab is more than an acre in size and will be the foundation for two buildings

Crews have been pouring millions of pounds of concrete nonstop since 6 a.m. today as part of the construction for an adult luxury condo in Chilliwack.

On Tuesday, a 44,000 square foot foundation slab was being poured for the Skynest development at the corner of Vedder and Watson roads.

The public was invited to come out and watch “The Big Pour Event” from behind the blue construction fence that day.

What makes the pour so unique is that it’s one giant slab of concrete for both of the development’s two buildings.

It’ll take about 150 concrete trucks to complete the pour, said sales and marketing manager Tracey Klaver.

The average truck carries about eight cubic yards of concrete, so once it’s all done the total weigh of concrete poured will be about 4.8 million pounds.

Crews are scheduled to continue pouring concrete until about 6 p.m. One lane of Vedder Road is closed for most of today as a result.

Skynest is an 98-unit, six-storey condo for people age 45 and older. The project is by Canadian Retirement Developments in partnership with Tzeachten First Nation. The expected completion date is late 2021.
