Trees felled contrary to district policy will cost the property owner $125,000.

The 67 protected trees were cut down in January 2009 at 1870 Keating X Road.

The Central Saanich tree protection bylaw outlines a fine of $100 per centimetre of trunk diameter as measured at breast height for each tree cut, for the municipality to use in tree planting projects in district parks. Each tree cut is considered a separate offence.

The owner of the property, Randy Sewell, agreed to a settlement of $125,000 to the district for legal costs and planting trees in the district.
